The Shetland pony is a Scottish breed of pony originating in the Shetland Isles in the north of Scotland and is their national treasure. They may stand up to 107 cm (42 in) at the withers. Shetlands are one of the smallest horse breeds in the world, and they love the water. They are natural-born swimmers. Scientists believed Shetland ponies roamed the hills of the Shetland Isles as far back as 8,000 years ago or at least since the Bronze Age (3,000 BC). In the 19th century, the breed almost became extinct due to the exploitation and exportation of the best breeding stallions to work in coal mines. Today, they are known for making wonderful pets, companions, and riding ponies. Their small size, incredible strength, and generous coat and mane have fascinated horse lovers for centuries, and they continue to be a favorite for children and adults all around the world.
